Below is the statement I made on Mix 104.9 on October 10th.
Hi, this is
John Enns-Wind, Mayor of Kindersley.
I want to
begin by thanking you for your cooperation and patience as our team
extinguishes the fire. It is our hope that most of the fire will be out late
today.
Please be
advised that the Town of Kindersley is recommending "Shelter in
Place" if you reside or work within 1 kilometre of the fire at the
landfill. This is recommended because of expected poor air quality caused by
smoke. If there is smoke please stay inside with closed doors and windows and
your fans turned off.
The plan
used yesterday is succeeding and will be continued today. Our fired brigade has
been working with fire crews supplied by the province, and our public works
crews, and they are pleased with their progress. My confidence and admiration
for the professionalism and cooperation of the team has grown.
Ministers
Jim Reiter of Government Relations and Ken Cheveldayoff of Environment have
called expressing their support. I was able to tell them how well their Rapid
Response Teams have contributed to suppressing the fire and smoke. The success
we are experiencing against the fire is due to the collaboration of local and
provincial staff and officials.
I also want
to assure you we are examining our options regarding waste disposal and have a
short term solution as we look for medium term solutions. Details are still
being confirmed.
Tuesday we
took extra precautions to mitigate the rat risk as well.
Please
remember we have declared a "Local State of Emergency" to maximize
all local and provincial resources. This decision was timely and has greatly
contributed to the success of suppressing the fire.
As updates
become available, they will be posted on the Town's website and broadcast on
CJYM 1330 radio and Mix 104.9.
Thank you
for your patience as we continue to work to suppress the smoke and fire and
address other issues such as waste disposal for next week.
