One of the consequences of our landfill fire is that the provincial auditor audited the Ministry of Environment regarding their management of landfills. Some of the findings include:
- many landfills are not up to code,
- standards need to be established for the ongoing covering of landfills,
- many landfills need updating,
- some landfills should be shut down,
- 80% of landfills do not have documentation indicating how they were built,
- improved monitoring is needed as well,
- 30 landfills had not been frequently inspected with one landfill not having an inspection for 6 years.
