Moment with the Mayor: Imagine

Hi Neighbours:

One of my daydreaming activities is to imagine I have a time machine. I have often imagined myself travelling to the past to witness both great events and the banal. How did creation come to exist? Why did the dinosaurs perish? Was life as nasty, short, and brutish as depicted in Rome? What were the plains of western Canada like more than 200 years ago? I’ve often imagined myself canoeing, hiking, and riding across a pristine Canada meeting indigenous peoples and seeing a land that echoes in my memories like Eden.

One thing I don’t do in my daydreams is travel into the future. It’s not that I don’t imagine a future world; I do. But I’m the type of guy who doesn’t read the last chapter of the book first, and travelling to the future would be like reading the last chapter first.

As Tent Town’s (now Kindersley) founders broke the ground and made their sod houses and set up their tent homes, what did they imagine? Could they foresee the transformation of this “bleak and inhospitable country” as a thriving community of 5,400? Did they imagine Motherwell Reservoir as a recreation area rather than a water source? (Could the Hon. William Motherwell imagine pumping water 55kms?) Did Mr. P.C. West imagine a whole line of shops lining the dirt path through town for passersby as he drove the first car to Kindersley in 1909? Did the Bynes, parents of the first child born in Kindersley, imagine a walking track, curling rink, ice surfaces, ball fields, dance studios and more for the their daughter? (Kindersley’s first rink cost $12,500 in 1912)

What do you imagine Kindersley will look like in 3, 5, 10 and more years? Think of the changes we have experienced in the last couple of years with Brookhollow Estates, new hotels, new restaurants, and a new rink. What does Kindersley look like with a new pool? A new performing arts centre? Revitalized downtown? What haven’t we imagined? Just as our founders rolled up their sleeves and got to work, we have to continue the work of building Kindersley. At the end of the day, we’ll be surprised just like the founders whose names are still here: Baker, Ditson, Graham, Halpenny, Mitchell, Simpson, and more.

March Your Way 2 Fitness: Update

What a difference 8 days makes!

The people participating in the March 2 Fitness have now travelled about 100 kms east of Thunder Bay. When last we checked in on them they were just west of Portage la Prairie with almost 839 kms. March 2 Madness has travelled twice as far in the last 8 days for a total distance of 1,765.47 kms.

Norm Ritchie Community Centre (NRCC) Management Board

This past Monday a meeting was held to determine if a management board would be a method to better utilize the NRCC. Those in attendance were from Kindersley and District Arts Council with regrets expressed by a couple of other individuals on behalf of groups.

A presentation, developed by Culture Manager Michelle MacMillan, was developed and it follows.

The next meeting is April 20th and more answers and discussions will be held at that time.

Moment with the Mayor: Updates

Hi Neighbours:

Today is a bit of an update on a number of items.

The Pool: Council is engaging Group 2 to work on the new pool. Their last report gave three options that we can’t afford at this time. Laura and her group will meet with us as a community, and based on the feedback, design a new aquatic facility with features we want and need as a community within an affordable capital and operational budget. Ideally, we would like this by June 30^th but I think this deadline may be tight. Please keep an eye for announcements to participate. Council has also extended a formal resolution to the RM of Kindersley to appoint a Councillor to our committee.

Boston Pizza held a groundbreaking ceremony on March 6^th at their location at the west end of Town off of HWY #7. The restaurant and lounge is expected to hold about 150 people. Boston Pizza is aiming to open this coming August.

Have you noticed the two new hotels under construction? Canalta is behind the Boston Pizza location and Best Western is behind and west of Mainline Motors. Both hotels are expected to open in the fall, if not sooner. You may be interested to know that both hotels will have pools. Snow White Inn is now open.

GrilledCheesePalooza reps met with Council. Did you know that 1,300 people attended their music festival last year? They had 70 bands apply last year to participate, and so far this year, with about a month left for the deadline, they already have 70 band applications.

We have also met with the Fire Department. They have some challenges: One of our pumpers has been out of commission since late December; one of our trucks is due to be replaced; more space is needed for training (such as working in stairwells with hoses); the current building is too small, and more. Members of Council will be working with the Fire Department to address some of their challenges. Just a reminder, the Town recently purchased the lot west of Peavey Mart as the site of a new hall. There is a rumour floating around that the Town has a ladder truck; that rumour is false. We don’t have a ladder truck and don’t have the ability to rescue people from higher floors.

Music Festival has started with 437 students. The Festival of Stars is Friday March 20^th at 7:00 at the United Church.

2015 Men's & Women's SK Masters Curling Championship

This evening I had the privilege of welcoming the competitors to the 2015 SK Men's and Women's Masters Championship. Teams from around the province, including the National Women's Champions Team Kopach of Saskatoon. Our very own Team 'Fancy' Feist is also competing. The bonspiel ends on the 15th. Admission prices are pretty modest if you are looking for something to do check out the curling.

·        Kindersley has a proud history of hosting large sporting events, most recently with the World Junior A Hockey Challenge in December and we are looking forward to our time with you

·        I hope you take an opportunity to tour the Events Centre, perhaps take a walk around the track between games, and enjoy some food and drink from our vendors

·        Kindersley continues to grow and those of you who may not have visited here for several years may notice an abundance of new hotels and stores.

·        It isn’t just oil, gas, and agriculture driving Kindersley, it is also the imagination of our people as we imagine a new normal and build towards it

Reading List

I've been asked a few times about what books I am reading. My reading list is eclectic and generally grows every year. My list grows based on recommendations from friends and colleagues. However, I have to admit, I haven't really added to the list the last couple of years due to time; not every book makes it to the list. Most of my reading since 2012 is to master the learning curve that comes with my civic responsibilities.

My list is below and I figure I am about 66% through the list. Given my current rate of reading, the list is outpacing me.

I like books that tackle the fundamental question asking: "What is the good life?". I think the 'unexamined life is not worth living' and by reading and discussing great books that address our condition, I can search out these questions with the great minds of today and yesterday.

Anatole Broyard expressed in the New York Time Book Review how I feel about many of my books:

My friends come to me to borrow books because I have more than most people.  In their innocence, they have no idea what I go through in lending a book.  They don’t understand that I think of myself as offering them love, truth, beauty, wisdom and consolation against death.  Nor do they suspect that I feel about lending a book the way most fathers feel about their daughters living with a man out of wedlock.  This is not to say that there is no pleasure in lending.  Each man has a bit of the evangelist in him, and when a book moves me I want to put it into everyone’s pocket.

The moment the book is lent, I begin to miss it.  According to t.s. eliot, each new book that is written alters every previous one.  In the same way, each absent book alters those that remain on the shelves.  The complexion of my library, the delicate gestalt, is spoiled.  My mind goes to the gap as one’s tongue goes to a cavity.  My security is breached, my balance tipped, my affections confused, my barricades against chaos diminished.  Until the book is returned, I feel like a parent waiting up in the small hours for a teenage son or daughter to come home from a dubious party.

The most dangerous part of lending a book lies in the returning.  At such times, friendships hang by a thread.  I look for agony or ecstasy, for tears, transfiguration, trembling hands, a broken voice – but what the borrower usually says is “I enjoyed it” – as if that was what books were for.

Fraud: Former CAO Monies Repaid

Recently the Chamber of Commerce hosted a session on "Fraud and Scams" during their AGM. The case of our former CAO still casts a pall over our community. That pall is distrust and if we are going to move foward as a community we have to trust. Regretfully, when we trust we may be hurt. Fraud is betrayal and difficult to overcome. One of the things I've learned is that most fraud cases are difficult to discover. Fraud is revealed as the fraudsters make decisions and actions based on their unseen gain.

All this is to say that today I had an enquiry regarding our former CAO and if monies have been repaid. The money has been repaid and here are the records:

March Your Way 2 Fitness

Since March 1st participants at the walking track have been loggin how many kilometres/miles they have walked.

Between March 1st at lunch to March 10th participants have almost walked to Portage La Prairie in Manitoba. To walk this far 4,413 laps have been walked for a total of 838.7 kms.

Next time you are at the track check out the map and how far individuals have walked.

Kindersley & District Music Festival

The Music Festival started Monday with almost 440 students participating. It is a big event with lots of disciplines including piano, strings, instruments, voice, spoken word and musical drama. Performances can be seen at the NRCC and St Paul's United Church; check scheduling for times and places. The Festival of Stars, featuring the best performers in their groups, is Friday March 20th at 7:00 at St Paul's.

Now if you are wondering about the benefits of music education on your child or grandchild consider the passage below. I received it in an email I received this morning as part of a subscription I have with Harvard Business Review called the "Daily Stat."

Learning a musical instrument during childhood and adolescence increases cognitive skills by one-fourth of a standard deviation and school grades by one-sixth of a standard deviation, effects that are twice as large as those from sports, according to a study in Germany by Adrian Hille and Jürgen Schupp of DIW Berlin. Moreover, adolescents with music training are more conscientious, open, and ambitious. The reasons for the cognitive improvements are unclear, but studying music may boost brain functioning and, because it encourages persistence, may increase conscientiousness, the researchers say.
