Coleman Cres Park Ideas

Like any good pasta cook, the Open House had a 'spaghetti throwing' session. The session was to collect ideas for the park. After a slow start things picked up. Here they are:

• open space for free play
• trees and benches
• irrigation to keep the grass green
• multi generational amenities
• a hill that could be used for tobogganing
• landscape the mailboxes including a windbreak
• a path
• off-street parking
• infant swings
• small playground with impact zone
• path with soft surface
• drainage away from the park
• soccer pitch (the field is too small for an official size soccer pitch)
• sandbox
• tennis court
• all the parks should be connected by trails
• lighting for safety
• a fundraising bbq
• pickup basketball space including a hard surface
• in kind donations

Coleman Park Open House Presentation

There was a good turnout for the Coleman Park Open House. There were lots of residents at the meeting from both Hahn Crescent and Coleman Crescent.

One of the outcomes that we wanted from the Town perspective is a working committee to help develop a concept and budget of the park. Good news: 11 people signed up to be on the working group and more there was also more good news - the Coleman Cres neighbours were planning a neighbourhood bbq when I left.

Annexation

Since June Admin has been exploring the planning rationale for annexation of 6 quarters of land from the RM of Kindersley.

This is still in the exploration stage with no final decision made. Should the Town decide this is what we want to do then negotiations need to be held with the RM regarding compensation. It can be a long process. Needless to say rural municipalities and urban municipalities don't always agree on compensation.

More Coleman Park Ideas

I received some more suggestions regarding the development of the park between Hahn Cres and Coleman Cres. These ideas are worth discussing. Before getting into the ideas a quick note: Council allocated $25,000 for the development of this park for this year. Some of the money has been spent to level the land. Monies will be set aside for the park next year but I don't know to what extent it will cover all of the amenities for the park.

Without further adieu here are some great park ideas:

• there is a great need for non organized recreation spaces.
• outdoor sand volleyball courts,
• a lawn bowling pitch and a picnic area with closed in BBQ's.
• these ideas makes it a multifunctional area that all age groups in the community would be able to use.

Coleman Cres Park Public Consultation

What do you do with a blank slate? For some people it freezes them - I call this 'blank pageitis.' Kindersley has a wonderful opportunity to turn a blank field into a beautiful space filled with laughter and tears along with screams of victory and defeat plus the low hum of conversations.

Can you imagine a green space with soccer lines on a level field surrounded by a small walking trail with a small child playground including a baby/toddler swing? That is what one family imagines in their email to me.

How about a small parking lot on the east side so kids don't have to cross the road?

Benches for those quiet, and sometimes intimate conversations?

How about outdoor workout spaces for those into fitness training?

What do you think about a couple of tables that could host a picnic? Perhaps a bbq?

Pool Update

Last week we met with Group 2 regarding the pool and community responses. There is a lot of discussion regarding having a 6 lane pool or a 4 lane pool and no consensus has emerged so far. As a result Group 2 has been asked to provide more information on 6 lane pools so Council can make an informed decision in September and so that you can know the cost of our options. As a result of this the presentation to Council by Group 2 has been moved to September.

Regarding the survey: so far more than 550 people have completed the survey. The survey has been extended to the 17th to accommodate those families away on holidays.

Aeration at Motherwell

Not only did I notice the bench that had been moved but also the installation of the new aerator at Motherwell. When I had left the beginning of July the committee was only half way to raising the necessary funds for the aerator. Thank you to the person, persons, or group that stepped up to fill the gap.

Sewage Facility Build Canada Fund (BCF) Application

We have been anxiously, and patiently, waiting to learn if we received funding for a new waste water/sewage processing facility. The new facility, a lagoon, hybrid, or mechanical, is expected to cost more than a pool.

Here is a not so interesting tidbit: more than $1 billion of applications were received and only $43 million worth of projects are being approved.

I regret to share with you that we did not receive any funding for this project. We will keep our ears to the ground hoping new programs will be announced after the federal election.

Norm Ritchie Community Centre (NRCC)

We received good news regarding the NRCC. Working with the proposed new management board, an application was submitted to the federal Canada 150 program. I am please to share with you that the request for $102,250 has been granted.

New Grain Elevator

Some significant engineering work is being undertaken in the RM. Just west of town on the gravel road north of the railway a new grain elevator is being built. The concrete pour is being done almost none stop over about 7 days.

Regarding New Playground between Coleman and Hahn Cres

I had a question about the playground between Coleman and Hahn Cres: the short answer is that there will be public consultations and residents of the neighbourhood are welcome to make submissions.

"Fat Cat Splash Pad" Grand Opening

Today was another good day: the grand opening of Synergy Credit Union's "Fat Cat Splash Pad." Due to the cool wind only one child, in a rain jacket, ventured into the splash area.

My opening remarks and pictures are below.
