Provincial Landfills Audit

One of the consequences of our landfill fire is that the provincial auditor audited the Ministry of Environment regarding their management of landfills. Some of the findings include:

• many landfills are not up to code,
• standards need to be established for the ongoing covering of landfills,
• many landfills need updating,
• some landfills should be shut down,
• 80% of landfills do not have documentation indicating how they were built,
• improved monitoring is needed as well,
• 30 landfills had not been frequently inspected with one landfill not having an inspection for 6 years.
