Pool

Last night Council met with Group 2 regarding the development of a new pool. We came away encouraged. Council has directed Group 2 to look at both an indoor and outdoor pool.

Group 2 has suggested that an indoor pool may be build for $6 million - $7 million depending on design and configuration.

Public consultations start in May so please watch for notices and participate. The more people participating the better.

Bernie, our CAO, asked how much it would cost to rebuild the old indoor pool. The back of the envelope answer for 25 m swim meet tank, 15 m shallow end with a movable bulkhead, a tots wading area, and a slide, plus change rooms, admin room, and party area on a second floor is around $4 million. Again, I emphasize this is only a quick estimate calculated during our meeting last night.

I feel encouraged.

Skateboard Park

Last night Tyrone Kennedy-Bush, a skateboard enthusiast, presented to Council his idea for a skateboard area at the rink near the water treatment plant.

Council likes Tyrone's initiative and has encouraged him to work with the group that has done some work to fix it up, form a group/committee to apply for funds, and work with Administration to ensure it is as safe as is reasonably possible.

So to all of you skateboarders, have fun, be safe, and respect the neighbours.

Moment with the Mayor: Thank You!

Hi Neighbours:

This week I am feeling very thankful for all of the people who make Kindersley a great place to live. As I write this, the challenge is being able to personally thank everyone. I will do my best, but I apologize for anyone I may have missed. Please accept my thank you as well.

This past week, I was speaking with two presidents of two different organizations. As we shared stories, we both agreed that we were glad not to be in the other’s shoes. It caused me to reflect on all the presidents, chairpersons, and leaders of the many, many recreation and culture groups, teams, and organizations, service clubs, social service agencies, community boards, committees, and volunteer-based programs. Thank you for all the time, energy, commitment, and even financial contributions you make to support your respective causes.

Further to this, thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who make all of the above-mentioned groups what they are and keep them running, whether by cleaning, counseling, coaching, repairing, giving of your time, and so much more. Because of you, Kindersley is richer. We are a community that is more beautiful, more just, more fulfilled, and has healthier relationships.

To those of you who donate money to all of our community fundraisers, thank you. Without your support, many of the equipment and salaries that need to be paid would go unpurchased and unpaid.

To our Town staff, thank for your hard work to make Kindersley a great place to live.

Last but not least, thank you to the businesses that have invested and continue to invest in our community. There are a lot of opportunities in West Central Saskatchewan.

To all of you who go above and beyond to make your neighbourhood, school, workplace, and Kindersley as a whole a better place, thank you.

I am proud to be Kindersley’s mayor and it is with great pleasure that I brag about our community as I meet others around the province.

Please write or phone if you would like me to discuss a particular topic. If you have any questions or comments, drop me a line at the town office or email me at mayorenns-wind@kindersley.ca. You can also check out my blog at http://mayorjohn.blogspot.ca/. I appreciate your feedback.

A Day at the WCEC

I spent a part of the Saturday at the WCEC. The place was busy which is good. Council has directed Administration to work towards 50% cost recovery. The best way to reach our goal is to have the place as busy as possible. Here are some photos from Saturday; they were taken within about half an hour of each other.
Parents at the SoccerJam. April 25, 2015
SoccerJam was organized by SaskSoccer and a former Kindersley resident was back in town as part of her responsibilities with SaskSoccer. Yes, I have forgotten her name.
SoccerJam Drills. April 25, 2015.
According the President of Minor Soccer, Janelle (I've forgotten her new married name; nee Graham), more than 80 kids signed up for SoccerJam.
Spring Hockey. April 25, 2015
On the other side of the rink one of the spring teams was practising.
SoccerJam. April 25,  2015
Back to the soccer area, my son's age group took to the pitch. We really need to purchase a subfloor so more activities can take place. It's on my wish list and hopefully it will happen for the winter of 2016.

SoccerJam was coached by the University of Regina Cougar's Women's Soccer head coach and a couple of players.
Soccer Referring Clinic. April 25, 2015
Meanwhile, the upstairs conference room was packed with people gaining their referee certification.
Spring Hockey 'AAA' Team. April 25, 2015.
One of the spring teams was also doing dryland training while the other Spring Team was on the ice.

Our goal is to have the WCEC busy like this all the time.

Track for Youth

The track club in Kindersley is growing and overseen by some terrific people. If your child, or grandchild, is interested there is a track meet coming June 3, 2015. All of the information is below and from one of their brochures.

What is the SOLE-stice Classic?

The “SOLE-stice Classic” is a series of meets designed to replace the Hershey Meets.  These meets are grass roots meets for young athletes to get involved in running, jumping and throwing competitions.  This program is being sponsored by Aboriginal Track & Field of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Athletics.
The term “Sole-stice” comes from the idea that the “final meet” will be held near the longest day of the year. The meets are geared for younger athletes who may not get many opportunities to compete against others their age in their region or from across the province.

How Kids Benefit

Participants can run, jump and throw in an event that stresses FUN rather than competition.  For some participants, the program offers an opportunity to refine their natural abilities.  For others, it may be the spark that ignites their interest in an activity that is mentally, physically and socially rewarding.

Who Can Participate?

Boys and girls between ages 7 to 13.
Age group classifications are determined by the participant’s Year of Birth.
Meteors (Born 2006/07/08)     Comets (Born 2004/05)                       Stars (Born 2003/02)
To get involved; select the regional meet nearest to where you live (www.solesticeclassic.com).  Then complete the computer online entry process.  Note that some of the Regional meets will be accepting on-site registration.  The best part is that no entry fees are charged to participate.  The 1st, 2nd & 3rd place participants from the Regional meet then advance to the Provincial meet held in Saskatoon on June 20th at Griffiths Stadium.
Events offered:
Meteors – 50m, 100m, Standing Long Jump, Ball Throw & 4x100m relay
Comets – 60m, 150m, 600m, Standing Long Jump, Ball Throw & 4x100m relay
Stars – 80m, 150m, 800m, Running Long Jump, Ball Throw & 4x100m relay.

Meet t-shirts will be provided for each participant at the Provincial Meet to be held in Saskatoon, June 20, 2015, Potash Park (formerly Griffiths Stadium)

Highlights of the Program

This program is very grass roots in nature.  Some of the key features are:
1. No track spikes or shoes designed for spikes or shoes with cleats of any kind are allowed in any event.  Competitors must wear shoes.
2. No starting blocks are allowed.
3. No fees are to be charged at any level.
4.  The emphasis of the meets is to have fun while getting young athletes to be active through fun competition.

How Do I enter?

To get involved; select the regional meet nearest to where you live. Then complete the computer online entry process.  Note that some of the regional meets are accepting on-site registration prior to the start of the meet.
