City Mayors' Caucus: Update

May 7th through May 9th I attended the City Mayors' Caucus hosted by the Mayor of Lloydminster.  It was Kindersley's first time at the event. The meetings were long and very informative. On the 7th we started with informal chats and then on the 8th we met informally and formally from 7:30 until 10:00. The informal chats are a great way to learn more details and insight on a broad range of issues.

Four delegations were before CMC from Canada Post (Community Mailboxes, Railway Association of Canada (safety), the Ministry of Government Relations (annexation), and Mission Zero (work and after work safety).

Discussions were held regarding:

  • The Fire Safety Act
  • The Cities Act
  • Building Canada Plan
  • Provincial Long-Term Infrastructure Program
  • Urban Highway Connector Program
  • Government Relations Administration Act
  • Multi-Material Recycling Program
  • Local Government Elections Act
We also had a tour of Lloydminster's new Operations Centre housing:

  • Public Works
  • Engineering
  • Planning.
It's not often I am in Lloydminster and during our tour I was impressed with how they are trying to manage their rapid growth. This year they are expecting 400 new housing starts and 400 rental units. The average age in Lloydminster is 27.

Minister Jim Reiter of Government Relations was a guest and Minister Gerry Ritz of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture attended Friday morning.

The meeting was very informative and helpful. I have already updated Council on many of the things we discussed.
