Canadian Budget Thoughts

The Tories presented their budget today. Here are some quick comments regarding municipalities:
  • The Tories demonstrated they are willing to work with municipalities to make investments in transit, and housing.
    • Much of the transit and housing monies will likely be allocated to larger cities.
  • Over the past few years the federal government has changed regulations to waste water plants, like our lagoon.
    • The cost of implementing the new regulations has been imposed by the federal government
      • The cost of these regulations is expected to be $18 billion over 30 years across the country.
    • We have submitted a grant application for 66% of a multi million dollar waste water facility.
      • Yes we are trying to keep our taxes down but if there is no senior level of government help then we have hard choices.
During our upcoming federal and provincial elections please ask the respective candidates what they will be doing to support municipal challenges such as the infrastructure deficit.
