800 Years of the Rule of Law (at least a start)

800 years ago today King John and his barons signed the Magna Carta in a bid to build peace. The document was originally written by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Over time we have attached a lot of 'stuff' to the Magna Carta; however, here is what it was supposed to do (of course it was fought over quiet a bit as interpretations varied)
  • protect church rights
  • protection of barons from illegal imprisonment,
  • access to swift justice, and
  • limitations on taxes to the Crown, taxes, or feudal payments, were to be approved by a Council of the barons advising the King.
