Hi Neighbours:
Recently, the
Saskatchewan Youth Parliament prorogued its May Mini Session at Kindersley
Composite School and I had the privilege of participating as “Lieutenant
Governor.” Four youth from Kindersley and west central Saskatchewan
participated, including my oldest son.
As Lieutenant
Governor, I nodded my assent for bills and resolutions. It felt awkward with
all the bowing and nodding that was happening, and I must say, based on this
experience, the Lieutenant Governor doesn’t say a whole lot.
Nonetheless, the
experience was a good one for everyone, and I was able to meet students from
Shaunavon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Alsask, Prince Albert, and more.
I was very pleased
to hear how positively the Youth Parliament group spoke about Kindersley. They
liked the community spirit, the participation of local youth, and the support
of the businesses for their cause.
The Youth Parliament
will resume in November in the Provincial Legislature in Regina. This is a
terrific program run by young people for young people. If you are interested,
or think your son or daughter would benefit, contact them through Facebook.
Last week, I also had the honour of
attending the annual Firemen’s Ball for the Kindersley Fire and Rescue Brigade.
The Brigade is in its 105th year of serving and protecting
Kindersley.
2015 has been a very busy year so far
for our local firefighters. From January until the end of April, the Brigade
has already responded to 70 calls. The highest number of calls in a year, to
date, is 175.
In his remarks that evening, Chief Ron Hope
spoke of his expectations:
· That the appropriate resources
will be available for all incidents,
· That the responses will be timely,
· And that the service provided will
be appropriate for the incident.
Chief Hope also
spoke about the expectations he has of his Brigade:
· Once signed up, there are no
volunteers; you are expected to show up for training and calls,
· You will do your best.
There are currently 22 active
members in the Kindersley Fire and Rescue Brigade, all of whom participate in
regular and aggressive training.
Thank you to the members of the
Kindersley Fire and Rescue Brigade for your service and commitment to
Kindersley and west central Saskatchewan. Council and I remain committed to
working with you to build a strong and sustainable fire department.
