CBC ITeam Investigative Report

As I mentioned earlier the CBC has been researching the state of landfills in Saskatchewan. Based on their research, even though we had the fire, we are not one of the 30 worst landfills in the province.

If you would like to hear their radio clip of the story click here.

To see their write up of the story click here.

For the record here are some of the actions we have taken regarding the landfill:
  • we have increased staffing from 3 people to 11,
  • crews are working at the landfill 7 days a week,
  • we are discussing having a transfer station with a couple of companies,
  • capital has been set aside to comply with the Ministry of Environment,
  • I am working with Bill Boyd to expedite an interim solution for our commercial construction waste,
  • the Regional Landfill Corporation has hired a consultant to help with the process of building a regional landfill site,
  • representatives from around West Central SK are going to their respective Councils with a proposed funding formula,
  • the consultant has identified a timeline so a regional landfill can begin operations in the fall of 2015.
Administration is working hard to comply with the terms outlined by the Ministry of Environment. Councillors Janzen and Sackville, and myself have been working hard to ensure that there is a regional landfill site sooner than later; preferably no later than the fall of 2015.
