Moment with the Mayor: Kindersley Waste and Recycle Centre

The Kindersley Waste and Recycle Centre and landfill has re-opened for business. However, the Ministry of Environment has required us to make some significant changes to the services we provide, including how we operate. I know that some of these changes present a real challenge for some of our local businesses and industry partners. The Town is working very hard on your behalf to find the best solutions to reduce the stress our businesses are experiencing.

Effective now, the only garbage that can be accepted at the landfill is regular household and commercial waste originating within the Town and RM of Kindersley. This includes concrete, asphalt, metal, organic waste, yard waste, appliances, furniture, and cardboard. All must be sorted and bagged or tied or it will be turned away.

The Ministry of Environment is also asking our industrial customers to please sort your skids in advance, and to get direction from landfill staff upon arrival so that your materials can be taken to the appropriate locations.

Due to the limited space available at the landfill and changes mandated by the Ministry of Environment because of the fire, we are not able to accept commercial construction waste. I know this is a burden for some of our residents and businesses. I apologize for the inconvenience and extra costs this poses to many of you. The fire has forced us to spend extra money to fight the fire and more money to reopen and maintain our license to operate.

There are several alternate locations within Kindersley and surrounding area where waste can be taken that is not accepted at the Kindersley landfill. Please visit www.kindersley.ca/garbage for a listing of these locations.

As always, the Town of Kindersley is committed to providing the best services possible to you. We are making significant changes that will improve staffing and procedures at the Kindersley Waste and Recycle Centre, and ultimately provide better waste management services to you.

For us to get through this season, we need to work together to solve this temporary challenge. If you can recycle or compost, please do so. If you are a commercial or industrial business, please sort your waste and work with our crews.

The landfill fire and the Ministry of Environment mandated changes are more than inconveniences and have been deemed necessary. Unfortunately, they also hit us in our bank accounts. I appreciate your patience and cooperation. For those of you who are struggling with the changes, I am sorry and we are working for you to find a solution for everyone.

Please write or phone if you would like me to discuss a particular topic. If you have any questions or comments, drop me a line at the town office or email me at mayorenns-wind@kindersley.ca. You can also check out my blog at http://mayorjohn.blogspot.ca/. I appreciate your feedback.
