1. How do you become the mayor?

You
have to be 18 or older
·
The
mayor is elected during municipal elections
·
A
candidate submits their nomination papers before the deadline and then
campaign, that is, persuade people to vote for you
·
The
person with the most votes after the election become Mayor
·
A
couple of weeks later the Mayor, along with members of Council, are sworn in by
a notary public
2. How long can someone be mayor?
·
You
can be mayor as long as people elect you to the office
·

3. How many people can run for mayor?
·
Whoever
wants to run for mayor can run for mayor, there is no limit
·

Canada’s largest city has 40 people running for mayor including a high school

4. Who else helps make decisions in our
community?
·
Lots
of people help with decision making
·
User
groups or residents make suggestions or requests
·
They
submit it to Council or Administration and we look at it
·
Administration
does research on the idea and makes a recommendation
·
Council
reads the Administrative report and also may ask close friends around them what
they think
·
Example:
soccer decides they need more space and time to allow children and adults to
play soccer
·
They ask the town to buy turf so the rink can be
used for soccer
·
Administration researches how viable it is
including expense and its impact on existing groups and people who use the rink
and make a recommendation
·
Council reviews the information and may ask
soccer people for more information
·
Council decides yes or no and there are a lot of
factors to consider

6. How does a law get made?
·
Laws
are made through Council resolutions
·
A
suggestion or idea is brought forward
·
The
idea is researched to determine if it is a good law
·
The
law is discussed by Council based on research and their opinions
·
A
vote is taken
·
If
a majority of Councillors vote in favour of the resolution then it is a law

7. Why do we have community laws or
rules?

We
have laws or rules for a number of reasons. Laws or rules help us:

live in a beautiful community

a community that is fair

live in a community that people can be vibrant

Relational:
a community in which people can live with one another and resolve differences
8. What do we do if people don't agree
when they make decisions?

Disagreement
is not a bad thing, it is good and healthy

Disagreement
is only bad if we don’t handle it well

We
can’t always get our own way
·
I
believe our Council handles disagreement well
·
They
key to handling disagreement is respect and grace
·
Respect
that other have good reasons for their decisions

to work towards the success of their idea
