This evening I had the pleasure of being a part of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Kindersley and District Co-Op. It was a great evening.
What follows is the text of my remarks. As a note: I don't always speak verbatim from my notes.
Remarks
·
Happy
Anniversary!
·
Thank
you for the invitation to celebrate with you this evening.
·
One
hundred years is a significant achievement for an organization
·
In
one sense, this is a birthday celebration – a tribute to the 100 years since
the Kindersley and District Co-op was established and has been active in our
community
·
It
is also an anniversary in that, over the past century, the Kindersley and
District Co-Op has been as the name suggests – a “cooperative,” a partnership
between many people working for the benefit of their neighbours and community
·
On
behalf of Council and the Town of Kindersley and our neighbours around town,
congratulations to the members, Board of Directors, and the staff of the
Kindersley and District Co-Op for your 100th Anniversary
·
Success
over a hundred years requires a couple of characteristics: vision and faith
·
And
I have to say that as I have lived in other communities across western Canada,
I have consistently seen these qualities in Co-Ops
·
Co-Ops
began with a group of people talking and working together to build something to
fulfill a need in the community; or they identified an opportunity to make our
lives better
·
I
have seen Co-Ops that have vision to see what can be
·
The
Co-Op here in Kindersley started with a few basic goods, and it has grown and
provided leadership to the town through growing its operations and bringing in
new goods and services.
·
An
expanded grocery store, lumber yard, gas station, petrol distribution and
C-Store with Kindersley’s first automated car wash
·
The
other characteristic leading to success for the Co-Op is faith
·
The
Co-Ops I have been a part of have faith in their community and faith in their
neighbours
·
It
is faith that together we can build
something
·
It
is faith that as we see beyond what is, we see what can be, and together we can
build it
·
I
want to congratulate the members, Board of Directors, and staff for the
courage, fortitude, and persistence to imagine a new future and the faith in
the community and neighbours to build a company that is a pillar of Kindersley
·
Kindersley
is at a tipping point in its history
·
We
are a rapidly growing community.
·
According
to the latest health figures, it is estimated our population has grown to about
5,400
·
As
we grow, we have to reimagine what Kindersley will be like with new businesses
and new owners plus new faces on our streets, in our schools and in our stores
·
Part
of sustainable growth is to have a vision of a quality of life in which every
resident in Kindersley can find fulfillment and relationships
·
For
the past 100 years, the Kindersley and District Co-Op has contributed to our quality
of life
·
So
again, on behalf of the Town and its residents, thank you to the Co-Op and its
members for your vision and faith in our community, both past and present.
·
May
you continue to work towards what can be
·
May
you continue to have faith that we can build together
·
May
you continue to have the courage and persistence to make your vision real
·
We
wish you much future success and look forward to working with you as we
continue building a vibrant community in Kindersley so that our residents can
truly experience the best quality of life we have to offer
·
Thank
you again for the privilege to celebrate with you
