Fire: More Stuff

Some Issues

  • Rats: extra rat traps were set Tuesday.
  • Garbage Disposal: garbage collection is to resume next week with disposal to nearby landfills. A medium solution is being discussed.
  • Investigation: once things "cool down" there will be an investigation into potential causes. We will also be looking at enhancing effectiveness.
  • Air Quality: as the smoke diminishes air quality in the smoke path will improve. We are also expecting the wind to pick up and shift further clearing the air.

Addressing Rumours:

  • The landfill staff did not ignite the fire.
  • The Fire Brigade did not start the fire while training.
  • Many more traps have been set for the rats.
  • The cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation will commence once the site cools down.
  • The Ministry of Environment will also inspect the site to monitor contamination to ensure ongoing safety.

OFIs (Opportunities for Improvement)

  • We could have been more clear about the "Shelter in Place" Tuesday night; I am sorry for the stress this has caused due to misunderstanding.
  • If you have a suggestion please email me. Please remember to keep your suggestions constructive, everyone has worked hard and long to be successful in fighting this fire. We care and we all want to do our best for you.

Got it Right

  • We declared the "Local State of Emergency" at the right time.
  • Team work between the Fire Department, Public Works, and Provincial Officials.
  • Thinking through and developing contingencies moving forward.
  • Honest conversations evaluating solutions and expressing concerns.
  • Great employers, such as Integra Tire and Kindersley Mainline, for releasing their employee for the day (there are more but those are the two I can think of near midnight of the 9th)
Once things return to normal over the next week we will be stepping back and evaluating the experience and process of fighting this fire so that when, not if, there is another event of this magnitude we can improve our responses.
