Waste Disposal Ground Compliance Inspection

A couple of months, August 15, 2013, ago we received a report from the Ministry of Environment regarding our Waste Disposal Ground. Here are some highlights from the report.

Our facility serves: Alsask, Smiley, Marengo, Flaxcombe, Brock, Coleville, Glidden, RM of Milton, and the RM of Kindersley,

The report indicates that daily cover/compaction "...is behind. Numerous bales of waste piled  up and not buried. This should be a priority and effort should be reduced the bales by the winter." Further, "Cover frequency must be documented." This work was underway at the time of the fire and on schedule to be compliant.

The report also indicates that "clean wood should be dealt with in the next couple of months. Begin burning everyday to reduce clean wood pile. This will provide more usable space." Wood burning in Kindersley is only permitted at those times when the weather conditions are appropriate including low winds. It is my understanding that burning can not take place daily due to winds.

Our facility receives a large amount of waste from our town and our regional neighbours. Our guys have been working hard to address the concerns in the report.

The final comment was that "Asbestos must be documented and recorded (location must be identified). This too was being completed.

Given the changes at the landfill site the Town is seeking clarification from the Ministry of Environment on best next steps.

All of this will be a part of our review so this does not happen again. As I have mentioned before we will be reviewing the emergency response and the landfill site to determine and celebrate those things we did well and identify those opportunities for improvement.
