Notice: Shelter and Place

The following is a public service notice prepared for the radio.

Hi, this is John Enns-Wind, Mayor of Kindersley.

Please be advised that the Town of Kindersley is recommending "Shelter in Place" if you reside within 1 kilometre of the fire at the landfill. This is recommended because of poor air quality within the identified area as a result of the fire.

What does "Shelter in Place" mean? This means you must remain inside your home or office and protect yourself there, or leave and relocate outside of the 1km radius area.

This applies if the air is smokey.

Here are some steps to keep yourself protected if you remain in your home:
  • Stay indoors and avoid being outside within the 1 km radius area.
  • Close and lock all windows and exterior doors.
  • Turn off all fans, heating and air-conditioning systems to avoid drawing in air from the outside.
  • Close the fireplace damper.
  • Get your emergency kit and make sure the radio is working.
  • Go to an interior room that's above ground level.
  • Using duct or other wide tape, seal all cracks around the door and any vents into the room.
  • Continue to listen to the radio or check our website.
If you don't feel well please contact the hospital or call 911.

As updates become available, they will be posted on the Town's website and broadcast on CJYM 1330 radio and Mix 104.9.

If you do not have a secure place to find shelter, please stay with friends and family outside the radius.

We have declared a "Local State of Emergency" to maximize all local and provincial resources. I have been involved in the response to the fire and have been impressed with the preparedness, professionalism, and dedication of our fire department and the provincial experts.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to suppress the smoke and fire.
